Challenge: Become Your Own Biggest Fan (5/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Becoming your own biggest fan is our topic  today (Day 5) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

Here we go:

00:42

Amazing human and beautiful soul, how is your inner dialogue about yourself?

Consider how kind you are when you speak to yourself. If you are like many humans, you already know you can be quite brutal.

Sadly, it is fairly common. Noting it, though, is a start.

For most of us, we haven't been trained to do anything other than unfortunate self-talk.

But noting that we do it, allows us to begin to be curious about it and consider new ways to talk to ourselves: ways to follow up with a thought and to show patience, kindness, loving consideration to ourselves.

Those unkind thoughts that we have about ourselves, they aren’t ones we were born with. We’ve heard them from someone and have decided that they are truths. If you are able to catch yourself in a thought about you that you wouldn’t say that out loud to someone you love (or anyone actually) then, it’s time to clean that up.

A really important thing to keep in mind, though, is to be kind to yourself as you process this. The last thing you want to do is bully yourself about bullying yourself - it is time to break that cycle. You are amazing after all!

One final thought to consider is that if you are unable to provide support and patience and love toward yourself, then where are you gaining the energy to do it for others?

Ooo. That was a little tough love there, huh?

For today, consider becoming your own biggest fan: cheering yourself on; having patience and love for yourself. And sit with the fun thought that your future self is cheering you on. Just as you can look back now and think upon your past self. How fun is that?

02:46

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is …. Do you realize how unsupportive you can be to yourself through your thoughts? And, what is one thought you can change up to allow yourself to feel better?

[exit music - upbeat]

Thanks for listening today, remember to check in on what you are saying to yourself, and don’t you dare forget that you are amazing!

Chat next time!

Challenge: Celebrate Personal Wins (4/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Celebrating your personal wins is our topic for today (Day 4) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

If this is your first time listening,  know we are diving into the challenge content. If you like what you hear, jump back to the episode titled “Getting Started with the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success” and then work your way through from the beginning - or visit EmptyNestSuccess.com to sign up for daily or weekly email delivery of this challenge that will lead you to companion videos, additional journal prompts, resources and more!

Here we go:

00:43

Amazing human and beautiful soul,  it is incredibly easy to take small wins for granted. This topic is one of my favorites. I encourage you to everyday,  celebrate a win - or multiple wins.

I like to say - celebrate your wins: big or small, we celebrate them all!

There are days where getting out of bed is a win! Maybe you made all the meals for your family - and you always do (without even giving it a second of thought).

I invite you to find something to celebrate each and every day. If you're comfortable, share your celebration with others, but be careful that you don't change how you feel about your win based on their reaction.

Sometimes the reactions of others may not line up with our expectations of their reaction. This could be for many reasons:  maybe they may have no interest in it; they may have something else entirely on their mind; they may not understand to the level that this is a big deal - for you. Maybe, it’s something that's easy for them, but it wasn't for you.

With this in mind, I encourage you to make the celebration of your win less dependent on other people's reactions.

If you feel good about the win before you tell someone, make sure no matter their reaction you still feel good about it after. It’s important!

You should be really proud of yourself. I’m celebrating with you and I'd love to know what your wins are.

02:28

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is ….What wins have you been ignoring in your life?

02:35

[level-up music]

As always, I provide content to make you think. My hope is that I am able to provide you with thoughts that positively impact your life. If you enjoyed this episode, I invite you to take a moment to follow this podcast - it is free after all - AND become this podcast's hero by sharing it with others! Thanks for listening today. Way to go on celebrating your win, and don’t you dare forget that you are amazing!

Challenge: Your New Role As A Parent (The Coach) (3/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Your new role as a parent is our topic for today (Day 3) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[happy upbeat music under voice over]

Here we go:

00:44

Amazing human and beautiful soul you’ve made my day by stopping by and listening.

One of the things I love most about coaching clients is being able to witness their new-found trust in themselves as they begin their journey forward in a way that truly honors who they are. It isn’t an easy thing to explain with words but I’ll make an attempt:

I imagine it as if energy that has always been there within these beautiful humans (hiding) is initially doing its best to peer through cracks in all their thoughts and beliefs of who they are - which tend to be thoughts built with words from others. Providing space for them to be them, to share their feelings, their thoughts and begin to be curious, allows those cracks of light (their inner being) to expand at first into a window but eventually a beautiful stained glass window that is all theirs.

With their beautiful light shining out into the world in their unique way, they gain the confidence to live life in a way that honors them; and in also showing up in their authenticity - the world gets so much more just by them being who they are.

Ooooo… it’s so good.

I share this with you, as being able to do something similar for your child is about as good as it gets. You can almost imagine the colors and dancing colorful lights you would be able to have in a room when two people show up in this way.

Yes, we know your role as a parent will adjust and be different as your child grows up, but I invite you to consider that that role (as a coach), when you choose to show up in that way - in those times where your initial gut reaction is to solve everything - but you choose to be that coach for them, that is a gift that will continue to keep giving.

And, of course, you can pop out of the role whenever necessary.

Consider the pressure you get to take off of yourself as your emerging adult has the space they need to become their best version of who they are meant to be.

These skills, thoughts and concepts in this: the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success are all ones I use with my clients  - and are also ones you can adapt in your own life to use with your child.

I often hear comments such as: "My time as a mother is over." or “All I ever wanted to be was a parent, and now I’m not sure who I am.”

You are still a parent. It is different, sure, but trust me, you’ll have moments (usually when you least expect them) when your adult child suddenly needs you - and then it is “go time.’

This different role as a parent could be:

Different [matter-of-fact]

Different [sad]

Different [questioning]

Different [happy]

You get to choose. Imagine, for a moment,  a relationship with your child long-term where your whole purpose is to love them and not to solve their problems. Imagine that you are confident in who you are and show up seeing them in all of their potential - even when they can’t see it themselves.

Imagine yourself giving them the space to be fully them: when they are winning, and when they are in the midst of losing - it’s all their journey and their opportunity to learn more about themselves.

I invite you to consider this new parenting role as a coach. I’m cheering you on!

04:49

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is:  How do you feel about considering yourself as a coach to your child(ren) and what kind of coach would you like to be?

[level-up music]

Back to you, my listener, or C.E.O. in Training, are you ready to dive in? Here we go!

 [level-up music]

01:25

Amazing human, you may be wondering why I mentioned that there would be an announcement recap. Here’s my thinking: this empty nest success challenge is meant for you to have ideally, under ten minutes of an episode to introduce a concept to you. Rather than doubling the time of the remaining episodes by repeating these announcements each time, I’m going to trust that most of you will start with these first few, and will have everything you need, and if not, you’ll know to click through to my website or to check the show notes in order to be pointed in the right direction.

My goal is for days 3- 30 of this challenge, we’ll jump almost immediately into the topic of the day and then allow you to dive into your day and continue on your journey in becoming the Conscious Effective Olympian of Your Life!

Before I recap the announcements, I’m thrilled that I have a brand new one today that is incredibly well-timed following our top-of the-toolbox episode!

02:28

[level-up music]

I’m thrilled to invite you to join me and over 100 other expert speakers in the Get Organized virtual HQ summit. I have a free ticket for you and it includes the special bonuses of an Event Facebook Group invite - yes, I’ll be popping in there from time to time - you also will receive an Attendee Roadmap and a Personalized Schedule Generator - as with over 100 sessions lined up, it may be hard to know where to begin.

Honestly, I can’t sing the praises of the Get Organized HQ team enough. I’m a pretty type A, and a super organized human which means I have high standards when it comes to events and this one is unbelievable - all of the sessions are ready and waiting to go live, this team has also thought of every detail - you won’t be disappointed.

For you my listener, I recommend using this summit as an opportunity to find some new top of the toolbox items or fun projects - I even created a YouTube video (I don’t do these often) [giggle] - it has some tips that will be live in a couple of days. It’s part of a wider playlist from other speakers in the event. And this playlist? It’s life hacks - I told you they thought of everything.

Don’t miss this opportunity. I’m honored to be a part of it and recorded my session while taking a walk in the woods - the title of it is Thought Decluttering and More for Almost Empty Nesters and Empty Nesters - and, by the way, I’m not the only empty nest speaker.

As always, you’ll find the link in my show notes. I hope to see you there and if you join the attendee Facebook Group, tag me and say “Hi!”

04:24

[level-up]

Now for your quick review of the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success announcements and resources. You’ll find links in the show notes to the following:

[bell sound] Videos for all of the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success days - if you prefer video to audio - or, maybe, you would like to reinforce the topics.

[bell sound] A way to register for email delivery of the challenge videos

By the way, there is a bonus coupon code in the workbook I just mentioned.

[bell sound] Links to follow me in two of my favorite social media platforms: TikTok and Instagram

Finally, the entire challenge is brought to you by the C.E.O. Training Team to Empty Nest Success membership, powered by SupaPass.

05:54

[level-up music]

Today’s topic is to embrace the bittersweet. You have 18+ years of memories, of relationship building, of getting comfortable in your role as your child’s parent, and as excited for them, you may also have competing emotions - depending on the moment.

Bittersweet is the best word I have found to describe the emotions of this time - and you may be able to apply it to any major transition in your life. Know that your emotions may take you on a “bit of a journey,” and they might surprise you. One moment you are smiling ear to ear and the next you are a ball of tears because you miss the dirty dishes you used to complain about.

Your emotional journey and your emotions are yours. Your emotions are fine to have because you are having them. Sure, they may take you for a ride, or maybe on a detour,  but you’ll get back where you need to be. First, claim that you feel the way you feel. Whether it is happy, sad, angry, anxious, or something else. Accepting the feeling allows you to do something with it - even if it is sitting with some ben and jerry’s ice cream while you watch your goto - that movie always makes me cry.

Embrace it all. Your emotions are a beautiful part of who you are and they have a lot to teach you about yourself.

If you are able to catch your emotions and label them, it’s a good time to pat yourself on the back that you “caught them.” If you have an emotion that makes you uncomfortable, you can try saying to yourself, “I am feeling _____. And at the end of that statement, you could try adding one of two things: that is okay / or and it will pass - whichever feels better for you, or something else if it works for you.

An important disclaimer that I must make and I really want you to hear: If you are unable to pull out of serious depression, or are having self-harm thoughts, please seek mental health resources! And, as always, I’m cheering you on.

If you are easily able to label and process through your emotions,  trust that you’ll be able to do more with your emotions in time but for now, embrace the changes and lean into the emotions that feel good. REALLY lean into those good ones!

08:25

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is Do you have competing emotions about the empty nest? What are they? What if you are curious about them rather than annoyed with those that you don’t love? By the way, find more journal prompts on this episode’s companion video in the Empty Nest Success online home.

08:49

[level-up music]

[end/tag line]

As always, I provide content to make you think. My hope is that I am able to provide you with thoughts that positively impact your life. If you enjoyed this episode, I invite you to take a moment to follow this podcast - it is free after all - AND become this podcast's hero by sharing it with others!

[exit music - upbeat]

Our topic today is an introduction to your life’s toolbox and to consider a journal for the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

Hello amazing human and beautiful soul! I am your host, Coach Christine Oakfield bringing to you the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[upbeat music begins under voice]

You'll find 167 episodes of content in season one of the Your Empty Nest Coach podcast. In this, the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success - or Season 2 -  I introduce 30 topics that have made a noticeable impact with my most successful clients. I invite you to use these episodes to begin uncovering who you are, whether the empty nest years are ahead of you, you're deep in them or even if your nest is becoming full again. You can move from freaking out to feeling freaking awesome about these years as you become the C.E.O.  - Conscious Effective Olympian - of your life.

Back to you, my listener, or C.E.O. in Training, are you ready to dive in? Here we go!

 [level-up music]

01:30

I am  thrilled you are listening today! I have two housekeeping items and one news item:

Our First housekeeping item: If this is your first time listening to the podcast, know that episode 0 in Season 2 of the podcast is the best place to begin - the title is Getting Started with the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success

And our second housekeeping item: This episode has a video with the same topic available in the Empty Nest Success home. The topic is the same with a different delivery and slight variations - I recorded it separately. The length is under 6 minutes long and in the description you’ll find additional journal prompts, quotes to consider as well as some other items.

For this video in particular, you’ll find links to my favorite journal & pen, in case you are curious.

A news item:  I recently chatted with Susie Pettit of the “Love Your Life Show” which you may listen to wherever you listen to podcasts -  or watch us chat on YouTube - we cover a tremendous amount of topics in our 40 minutes together! I enjoyed our shared energy very much. As always, you’ll find links in the show notes.

02:41

[level-up music]

In our last episode, I shared all about the challenge, answered questions and mentioned additional resources available.

For this, day one, I invite you to seriously Consider a Journal - keeping in mind that journaling can look different for each of us. Here are some suggestions:

  • Use a traditional journal - your favorite paper and pen is always a good idea!

  • Use the companion guidebook and printable page I have titled “Daily Journal!” Should you choose to use that, I highly recommend first spending a few moments filling out the “The Journey Begins” worksheet!

  • You could  use an online journal or app

  • How about index cards with some stickers, markers, and then placing  them in a decorative index card holder

  • And no one’s stopping you from journaling to get your thoughts and ideas out of your head and then tossing or shredding the paper.

Don’t be afraid to think like your younger-self, your most creative self and if you do journal, be sure it brings you joy!

03:44

Your Life’s Toolbox - which I also call the C.E.O. Toolbox. While, sure, you can purchase a real toolbox, make it super fun and note things that help you within it, but for these purposes, today  - especially, we’re talking about an imaginary toolbox.

We are focusing on the items in the top of your toolbox today - you know those go-to, quick and easy to access items that you need a bit more often and usually not for really big projects? Those items.

Your assignment, should you choose to accept, is to begin paying attention to things that bring you joy; make you laugh; you might want to try; things that bring you peace; hobbies you love; hobbies you wanna try; people you love chatting with, and so on.

The beauty of having this toolbox and creating it, filling it up, making it yours is that you will have things ready to access for when you need them. Think of it as your first-aid kit. Emotions can toss you around a bit through the empty nest transition and while I’m a huge fan of embracing your emotions and moving through them, let’s be honest, there are times when you may not have the time to do that work, and in that case, a reset of some sort is what I recommend. A conscious reset can make all the difference.

For that conscious reset, let me give you an example: maybe for you, you love watching a certain topic of videos on YouTube. Maybe there’s some guilt about how much time you spend doing that - that's a whole ‘nother topic we won’t dive into now, but this being said, you know that you enjoy these videos and they make you happy.

There’s a big difference from mindlessly watching the videos for hours on end with no plan, versus gifting yourself with the time to watch them as a reset.

The presenting of the gift of time and the reset is up to you. But that consciously gifting - the time you use with those top of the toolbox items before you use them can make a tremendous difference in how you feel when you wrap up your time with them.

While it’s the same videos you’re watching, it’s a different energy as you watch it.

Knowing you’re consciously choosing it as a distraction is the difference. It’s the gift you give yourself.

I encourage you to pay attention to this and see if anything changes for you.

Over the 30 days of this challenge, look for a new top of your toolbox item each day. And at the end, you’ll have 30. That’s a great start for when you notice your emotions are a bit too much for you.

Here are a few top of the toolbox examples to get your creative juices flowing: coloring - yes with crayons; taking a walk or run; sitting in silence and focusing on your breathing; how about: sitting in silence and staring at a wall?; going to the gym; calling or texting a particular friend; watching something that makes you laugh; reading…  I’d love to for you to share with us in the Empty Nest Success home, what fun things you come up with!

Earlier, I mentioned that you may always download the companion guidebook for the Challenge but if you aren’t someone who will do that, I’d like to quickly review the content there, as it may be useful.

In the Journey Begins worksheet we start with:

“My thoughts about the empty nest” - this is where you add three thoughts that are “top of your mind” and that you believe.

There is power in getting those thoughts out of your head and onto paper.

The thoughts don’t matter. You aren’t judging them; you aren’t rating them; you aren’t beating yourself up about them. We are simply writing down words and becoming curious about them.

This isn’t a time for editing either.

The next section is similar:

You write down three emotions you have about the empty nest…

Then I ask you to answer the question:

Who am I?

So I ask you: Who are you?

Don’t overthink it, just write whatever comes to mind. You’ll do the same worksheet at the end of the 30 days to see if your answers have changed.

The last question that’s kind of thrown at the bottom of the page is: Do I believe that I am amazing?

Then, for the Daily Journal, if you like structure, here’s what I recommend: each day, note any thoughts that arise while listening to or watching the day’s content.

Then, note a win for you for the day - this is a personal win. It doesn’t need to be a big win, either. What do you need to celebrate - for you?

Then we are going to stretch you:  note a dream that you have. Yes, each day we’re going to do this - the bigger the better. To be clear, we aren’t figuring out how to make them happen, we are simply tapping into the side of us that we may not be used to accessing. No editing. If it comes to mind, it makes your heart happy - even if it is pure fantasy - write it down. Maybe you want to fly to Neptune. Write it down. Use your imagination - it’s super fun!

If you aren’t noting those somewhere else, note a toolbox item: something from the day that you really enjoyed, that you could have in your go-to toolbox.

And finally, if you are so inclined, write this statement, or say it with me now “I am becoming the Conscious Effective Olympian of my life. I am a C.E.O. in Training.” You are! I’m so proud of you.

Your journal prompt for today is to imagine yourself 30 days from now: someone who has journaled each day, [and] has discovered much about themselves. And ask yourself: How did you do it? Did you set a timer? Did you schedule it in your calendar every day? Did you send yourself voice memos? Did you sign up for the email reminders? Be creative and consider what a life of 30 days of short, fun, and easy journaling would look like for you.
