Here we go:

00:42

Amazing human and beautiful soul, we are continuing to build our analogy with those building block concepts. What if the part of you that some call ego, you begin to think of as your protector?

Let me first share where this analogy came from …. I was working through reading “The Power of Now.” I talk about that in our episode about presence, and in that book Eckhart Tolle mentions the ego quite a bit. No matter how many times I read it, the word wasn’t resonating with me, personally, as positively as I believe he was intending it. I always associated the word “ego” with negativity, even though I know in different contexts it has different meanings. Being a person focused on finding ways to love all the parts of myself, this wasn’t going to work for me. This put me on a journey to discover a way to think of the ego so that I loved it and cared for it as it is part of me.

I tried different concepts and, finally, one resonated with me: the idea that this ego part of me was, actually, trying to do their best: it was overwhelmed, it’s untrained, and it’s working incredibly hard with barely any resources. I don’t know about you but I’ve been in job roles where I’ve felt that way and the way I show up is entirely different from the times when I feel confident in my role; I feel well trained;  I feel my boss has my back; and if I have a question, it’s okay because then, we can work it out together.

I began to play with this concept, adjust it and eventually landed on the name of a Protector - a security guard of sorts but one that I simply need to train. I’ve been told by some clients and podcast listeners that the analogy works well for them too! So, here we are, years later and it still fits.

Now back to the analogy we’re building: although your Protector will be different from mine - let’s add yours to your mind’s house, yard and fence.  Imagine adding on a security space just outside of your fence. This may be as intimate or as large as you like - be it a person standing there with locks on the gate and you need their intervention or a full blown security building with tv monitors, and a really nice chair for your Protector.

I’ll share a little bit about mine: I imagine mine in a hut just to the side of the fence. Now, they are trained enough that most of the time, they get to chill out. They’ve earned this chill out session: they get to drink  their coffee and watch all the monitors where they easily know which thing can pass on by my fence without me giving it a second thought.

We’ve gone through some significant training to get to this point, too.

If you’re starting to question where we are, pop back an episode or two and re-listen to the building of this analogy, or check the extra resources I have in the show notes!

If do you find this Protector concept resonates with you, spend some time getting to know your Protector, begin to consider what your incredible part of you would look like.

Remember the idea here is that they take their job of protecting you super seriously. And absolutely everything that comes near the fence, currently, puts them on high alert. EVERYTHING. It's not their fault. They haven't been trained  - ever. They have been doing this job for decades and you haven’t paid any attention to them. They are under the false assumption, also, that they are the boss.

They have no reason to think otherwise. All they know is if they don’t do their job well, bad things happen to you, and their job is to protect you.

But, what if.. (you know how I like that) what if you become the boss of your own life - the Conscious Effective Olympian) by taking the time to get to know and train your Protector to handle thought deliveries to your specifications. Specifications, that honestly, you don’t know yet because you still need to declutter your house - that’s all good!

Your job right now is to appreciate and love your Protector part of you for doing the best they could, up until now.

This challenge is a perfect example of a training resource that you can use to train your protector.  And this challenge is one huge introductory training program.

05:26

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is …. How do you imagine your Protector and where they reside as they do their job?

30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success: Your Fence - Setting Boundaries

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Setting Boundaries or Your Fence is our topic for today (Day 12) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

Here we go:

00:43

Hello, amazing human and beautiful soul, we are continuing our analogy today. If you recall, we began with the idea that your mind is like a house. In an upcoming episode, we’ll come back to those thought-box-deliveries. But, for now, I’d like you to imagine that there is a fence around a yard, outside of your house, and take in for a moment, or consider if you will, that a lot of things in your life have no need to ever cross over inside of your fence. And they certainly don’t belong in your house.

These could be thought-box-deliveries that come from happenings in life, circumstances, situations, the past, or the future.

Beginning to catch your thought-box-deliveries that belong outside of your fence before you allow them even inside your house can impact your life tremendously. Diving into this analogy and making it work for you, might provide, over time,  a fun way for you to consider your own boundaries.

While this is a super short concept, it is yet another building block for our Conscious Effective Olympian living: What if you consider that you can have that fence?

We’ll continue this analogy tomorrow.

02:06

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is …. How do you imagine your house and your fence? I invite you, in your journal, to describe it in detail or maybe even draw a picture!

30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success: Your Thoughts

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Your Thoughts are our topic for today (Day 11) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

Here we go:

00:42

Amazing human and beautiful soul, this topic is one that I’ve already touched on throughout our first ten days, and you’ll find it threaded within all of my content, whether I explicitly point it out or not.

The next handful of days (including today) is the meatiest portion of Challenge content. That doesn’t mean the episode is longer, it simply means you may need to chew some of these over a bit more in your mind before moving on. As with all of this challenge, you’ll find more on these topics in Season 1 of the podcast and in the Empty Nest Success online home.

The analogies I’m about to introduce, think of them as building blocks in your conscious effective olympian living.

Starting with our thoughts, the analogy I have for you is to think of your mind as a house. Imagine that the doorbell to that house rings every time a new thought shows up in your mind - And we have lots of thoughts. There are so many of these thought-box- deliveries that you can't keep up and out of frustration, you decide to provide your delivery person with a key to put the boxes wherever they can in your home. Yes, you’ve given up and - stay with me here for a moment - those thought-box-deliveries are everywhere: cluttered in the hall, in every room: floor to ceiling, on the stairs, blocking doors from closing, some doors from opening, and making it extremely difficult to move.

There are so many of these thought-box-deliveries in your house that  it's difficult to find the ones you love, and you have a really well worn path to the same thought-box-deliveries you continue to open time, and time, and time, and time again.

What if you have a choice? You can stay overwhelmed or begin inspecting the packages. Who sent these to you, anyway?

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that I recommend looking for that thought-box delivery labeled: I am amazing. Meaning, you: you are amazing - and open that one up!

For today, we’re going to introduce this first building-block of the analogy. Consider how cluttered your house might be.

03:13

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is … What are some thought-box-deliveries that you continue to open at the moment?

[exit music - upbeat]

Thanks for listening today! Check those thought-box-deliveries, and don’t you dare forget that you are freaking amazing!

My Lessons Learned

What have I learned recently?

Shared future-goals are super fun! In my last episode I talked about knowing where you are heading without being set on how you get there. With our personal move, hubby and I have been discussing what is next for us… how soon is retirement in our future? What does that even look like for us? And those things. I’ll be honest, walks are our best time to communicate, and he’s been doing some fun research.

Both of us know our full-time day job work isn’t something we can walk away from any time soon due to the need to catch up on our nest egg, our current commitments and those things, but we came up with a super fun and adventurous plan for our retirement together: one that will take many years of research and planning to pull off in a way we will be comfortable. I will say, it is incredible how much more meaningful our full-time work became now that we have this fun adventure to work toward.

We discussed on one walk how without that plan, it does feel a bit like a hamster wheel - you begin to wonder, “Where is the end?” - I mean the answer definitely could be, “well, there isn’t one.” That’s fun, and yes, that’s sarcasm; but not knowing what the end COULD look like can be defeating…

But then… add in some dreaming and planning into the mix and you may begin to see the strong possibility of making something happen that invigorates you, that gives you a reason why you do what you do - at least for now.

00:02:41

On another walk, we also discussed that this plan totally might change the more research we do, and that’s okay. The research is half the fun. I talk about this often when I’m coaching clients and talking in my podcast about your future-self: once you discover who they are - you can use them as your GPS for your life. You let them guide you and then you do research. You try living in the idea of that future-life possibility by deeply (ever so deeply) using your imagination -  in excruciating detail - and do that for some time - to play out how it might really look for you. It is only then, that you can begin to ask questions such as:

  • Do I like that lifestyle?

  • Does the lifestyle allow me to keep the things I love about my current life?

  • Am I willing to give up what I’ll need to give up to get there?

  • Am I willing to give up who I’ll need to give up in my life to get there?

  • Do I like my sleeping and waking hours?

  • Do I have the same support group around me or a different one and is that okay?

  • Do I like how much free time I have?

  • Was the work to get there worth the benefits?

00:03:57

Many of my clients do this work and do find that the “dream” that they thought they wanted, is actually a bit of a drag in one way or another. It is then that they get to decide if they wanna scrap that dream completely or maybe adjust it a bit.

This future-you dreaming is powerful and incredibly important, my friend.

I’ve been doing this stuff for years on my own, you can’t just ask someone to join you and expect them to be on board when they are so entrenched in details of where their life is now. It takes work to get to this point where you can dream again. But over time, if you keep doing it, sometimes things will shift in your life, and those others in your life that weren’t able to dream might start to be able to dream, too. I will tell you, I’m having a blast listening to my husband's ideas, his excitement and dreams.

Right now, some of these dreams we are super aligned together with - a couple we’re a little bit off but we have many years to figure it out together.

00:05:02

And then let’s be real for a minute, with life we might not have all these future years that we think we have together - sucky things happen in life that you don’t expect but what excites me is that by dreaming we aren’t wasting this time being miserable where we are. What fun is that?

We are dreaming for the future in a way that allows us almost the opportunity to live in it now and should we discover what we want that future - we can then begin to plan for it.

I’ve also mentioned this before - think about the moment you book a vacation. Yeah, remember those? For me, that vacation begins the moment I mentally decide we’re going on vacation because the planning really is part of the vacation. Have you experienced that?

In this segment I leave you with - where could you be dreaming more? It’s super fun!

00:06:02

And with that - I’ll be back tomorrow talking about what’s in your life’s toolbox, where I’ve been and finding the funny.

Be sure to check your feed every day for the next week or so, and DEFINITELY let me know what you think of these new shorter episodes, my empty nest friend.

00:01:15

Today I’m sharing something I found that I wrote and posted to Facebook back in 2016 - this was back when I posted on Facebook regularly. So, it’s been a while. I tweaked it a tiny bit and I share it with you today.

To my friends who think of their mother in heaven, today:

Know that your mother lives in you. She’s proud of you, and she loves you. Remember those great moments together and I am sending you a hug.

To my friends who think of their child in heaven, today:

I have no words. Love. I send you love.

To my friends who have estranged relationships with their mother or child:

I pray that peace will enter your lives this year - for both of you and that closure and the rekindling of a relationship - if possible and healthy - enters your life. May love win overall. Remember the good times even if they are hard to find.

To my friends who aren’t “Moms:”

I can’t begin to tell you how important you are to me. No matter your age, gender, race or how we know each other, YOU help me to be the mother I am. You listen even when you may not have a clue what I’m talking about and even when you may not want to hear me talk about my child anymore. You have NO idea how important that is to me and how much it helps me to be a better mother. THANK YOU.

And to my friends who dislike this day because they are a Mother but their family just treats it like any other day:

Yes, this happens. Please remember this one day is not the be all and end all to how they show your love. They love you, but they may not show it today. If you are still having a hard time feeling thankful, go back to my first two comments above and try looking at life a bit differently.  Then treat yourself today. You are worth it.

To my friends who love this day because it is all about them and they feel the love from their family:

You are truly blessed. Enjoy every minute. You deserve it.

00:03:28

As I read through that, there’s probably a few things I’d tweak even a little more but you get the idea.

I’ll be back tomorrow talking about the topic of shared future goals.

Be sure to check your feed every day for the next week or so for a new episode from me, and DEFINITELY let me know what you think of these new shorter episodes, my empty nest friend.
