This podcast is for you, a mother who years ago walked away from a career to raise your child. Sure, you’ve been busy with volunteering, car pools, maybe part-time work and taking care of everyone. But your main gig, that’s been your child. Now, that they are in their later years of high school, the empty nest looms ahead for you and it’s freaking you out. I’ve been there, and I get it. Together, we’ll turn our freaking out energy into freaking awesome energy.
Hello, my empty nest friend. I am so excited you are here today. This is part two of a five-episode series titled Empty Nest Prep. These five episodes are the base-level material of everything that I teach. In my last episode, I shared the story of your mind being like a house and accepting too many thought box deliveries. This episode might seem unimportant, but I’m here to tell you it is huge. I say often, that this work is simple, but it isn’t easy. Doing the work to make the change in your life takes actual work. Today’s message is that when you notice a thought delivery that has arrived in your mind’s house, I want you to observe it with fascination. It’s key. Be super curious. Be patient and kind to yourself. What you don’t need to do is see a thought box and then think I am a horrible person for having that thought. That simply brings in more deliveries, doorbell, doorbell, doorbell. That more than likely will clutter your mind with feelings and thoughts that don’t serve you in your life.
Your task is to notice the thoughts. If you have the time, write them down. Then observe them. Be curious about them. You are not your thoughts. You have the power to question each and every thought. You have the power to not accept the delivery. Even more so, if the thought wasn’t originally your thought, if it was said out loud by another human being and you decide to accept that thought, I want you to be really curious as to why you choose to clutter your house with that thought. Is it worth it? Do all of this with love and kindness for yourself. I know this is easier said than done. Trust me. I found my clients have no idea how unkind they are to themselves. How would you react if your child had the same thought about themselves? Question why you wouldn’t be as kind and loving to yourself. I’m serious here.
I don’t want to throw too much at you at once. This is super powerful when you get it, especially when added with the tool I will share with you in an upcoming episode. The next steps won’t help as much if you aren’t first noticing and observing your thoughts with kindness. I understand that I’m repeating myself, but this is really important, and I want you to get it.
A good exercise for you to do is to take the time to sit and write down the thoughts in your mind and observe them, my friend. Just write them down and observe them.
The questions for this episode are
