30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success: Your Thoughts

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Your Thoughts are our topic for today (Day 11) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

If this is your first time listening, know we are diving into the challenge content. If you like what you hear, jump back to the episode titled โ€œGetting Started with the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Successโ€ and then work your way through from the beginning - or visit EmptyNestSuccess.com to sign up for daily or weekly email delivery of this challenge that will lead you to companion videos, additional journal prompts, resources and more!

Here we go:

00:42

Amazing human and beautiful soul, this topic is one that Iโ€™ve already touched on throughout our first ten days, and youโ€™ll find it threaded within all of my content, whether I explicitly point it out or not.

The next handful of days (including today) is the meatiest portion of Challenge content. That doesnโ€™t mean the episode is longer, it simply means you may need to chew some of these over a bit more in your mind before moving on. As with all of this challenge, youโ€™ll find more on these topics in Season 1 of the podcast and in the Empty Nest Success online home.

The analogies Iโ€™m about to introduce, think of them as building blocks in your conscious effective olympian living.

Starting with our thoughts, the analogy I have for you is to think of your mind as a house. Imagine that the doorbell to that house rings every time a new thought shows up in your mind - And we have lots of thoughts. There are so many of these thought-box- deliveries that you can't keep up and out of frustration, you decide to provide your delivery person with a key to put the boxes wherever they can in your home. Yes, youโ€™ve given up and - stay with me here for a moment - those thought-box-deliveries are everywhere: cluttered in the hall, in every room: floor to ceiling, on the stairs, blocking doors from closing, some doors from opening, and making it extremely difficult to move.

There are so many of these thought-box-deliveries in your house that  it's difficult to find the ones you love, and you have a really well worn path to the same thought-box-deliveries you continue to open time, and time, and time, and time again.

What if you have a choice? You can stay overwhelmed or begin inspecting the packages. Who sent these to you, anyway?

You probably wonโ€™t be surprised to hear that I recommend looking for that thought-box delivery labeled: I am amazing. Meaning, you: you are amazing - and open that one up!

For today, weโ€™re going to introduce this first building-block of the analogy. Consider how cluttered your house might be.

03:13

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is โ€ฆ What are some thought-box-deliveries that you continue to open at the moment?

Challenge: Your Life's Toolbox (part 2) & Taking Inventory (10/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Your Lifeโ€™s Toolbox and Periodically taking inventory is our topic for today (Day 10) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

If this is your first time listening,  know we are diving into the challenge content. Here we go:

00:45

Hello, amazing human and beautiful soul! If you started at the beginning, you are now a third of the way through the challenge. Congratulations! While these episodes may be short in time, you showing up for yourself regularly (or even not so regularly - ha!), is a win - and you know I like to celebrate those.

We began this challenge at the top of your toolbox and the idea of adding items to the top that are usually quick, reset type items, or things you enjoy doing. Also, with the idea that using them should become a conscious choice that you are gifting yourself with the time to use them or to do them.

When diving into really discovering who we are and becoming the C.E.O or Conscious Effective Olympian of your life, we sometimes need to look a bit deeper, take a little more inspired action, or feel led to do something that requires a bit more of your resources.

This 30-Day challenge is a perfect example of a bottom of your toolbox item. Joining a support group, or a club, learning a new skill or language, heading to therapy, journaling over time and reflecting on your entries are all other great examples, too - and this is only a teeny tiny sampling.

The daily action of journaling, for me, is that top of the toolbox item, it's something that helps you to become present in the moment and consider things, but long term, over time, journaling and reflection, to me, thatโ€™s a bottom of the toolbox item.

What you may find interesting is things that I personally have in the bottom of my toolbox or the top of my toolbox may also be in your toolbox but in different positions based on where you are in your journey.

Letโ€™s also have a brief chat about taking inventory of your toolbox. Who you are right now in this moment is different from who you will be tomorrow, the next day, and the next day, think about six months - a year out. The items in your toolbox may work for you forever, OR, they may run their course, being something you needed just for a certain amount of time, which allows you to declutter and with the new found space, look for new items for your toolbox.

The reminder here is to continue your journey, and to consider new ways to develop who you are along the journey. Please, don't feel limited to things you hear from me or others. Trust your inner guidance - and thatโ€™s something that will become easier over time.

I have more information about your toolbox beginning with Season 1, episode 88 of my podcast.

03:47

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is โ€ฆ. Can you think of three new bottom of your toolbox items that you may want to attempt in the future?

03:58

Challenge: The Power of Presence (9/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

The Power of Presence is our topic for today (Day 9) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

Here we go:

00:42

Hello, amazing human and beautiful soul, jumping off of our last episodeโ€™s topic about the future storytelling, todayโ€™s topic is another one of my favorites.

Becoming present is a great way to turn off the autopilot mode of your life. Whether it's playing a board game, taking in a sunrise or a sunset, reading, or whatever it is, that helps you โ€œbe.โ€  Thereโ€™s a book all about this. Itโ€™s The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It's a great book. Iโ€™ll admit,  Iโ€™ve read it multiple times and even created a book discussion for it in the Empty Nest Success home, and you may join that anytime.

Have you ever paid attention to how often you catch yourself mentally nowhere near where your body actually is - those moments or sometimes hours or days where we go through the motions of life yet our thoughts are continually not where we are physically.

Maybe itโ€™s replaying the past; worried about the future; working through a conversation that has already happened or has yet to happen.

Now, this isnโ€™t always a bad thing, for sure, but becoming conscious of even just a little bit of this time and learning to direct your thoughts where you want to focus is an incredible skill to learn.

After all, we are human be-ings. Be. Just be.

The ability to tune into where you are; to be present; tuning into the now, is a fun activity to be able to do. In the last episode, I discussed catching the moments where we are dropping into scenarios of life that arenโ€™t โ€œnow.โ€ Being aware of this, brings the ability to choose where you place yourself, and also choose, โ€œnow.โ€

By catching that โ€œdrop inโ€ moment, you can then tune in and ask yourself things like, โ€œWait a minute, where am I focused right now? What am I doing? Am I going through the motions? Do I want to be going through the motions? Do I want to be more present? Or, What can I do to become present?

Noticing you want to choose to be more present? Then, this is where the top of your toolbox items may come in handy.

Sometimes, it's as easy as taking a few deep breaths. Other times, it's doing an activity, maybe taking a walk outside, you'll figure out what works for you and, also, your list may change over time.

Often, those top of the toolbox items youโ€™ve already noted are the ones that have the ability to bring you into the present moment. I love how that happens!

03:36

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is on a scale from 1-10, how present are you in life? Hereโ€™s a bonus one: Do you want more presence moving forward?

 [exit music - upbeat]

Thanks for listening today! Tune into where you are - see if youโ€™re present - and donโ€™t you dare forget that you are amazing!

Challenge: Their Future - What's Your Story? (8/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Whatโ€™s your story about your childโ€™s future? is our topic for today (Day 8) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

If this is your first time listening,  know we are diving into the challenge content. Here we go:

00:43

Hi, amazing human and beautiful soul, Iโ€™d like you to consider, today, the storytelling that  you do about our childโ€™s future (or your own future).

Anytime we think, share, or talk about the future we are in imaginary-land.

Meaning, we are creating something (telling a story) that may or may not ever happen. How often are we telling stories that make us feel something other than really fantastic?

Stop for a moment and take in that you have lived on this planet for decades figuring out things as you go. You rise to challenges, and sometimes you donโ€™t, but youโ€™re still here and you keep going. Trust in yourself that if the future plays out in an unexpected way that youโ€™ll have all the resources you need in that moment - or, that the unexpected way could be a lovely surprise.

Unless you are a time traveler,  (Do you have a tardis?) you arenโ€™t in the future.

You may not be surprised that I have an analogy for these future-story moments. Remember, these are moments when we are guessing what might happen in the future.

Have you used Google earth? Thereโ€™s that satellite view and then thereโ€™s an option to tap and get a street view style. Thereโ€™s a little person you can drop onto a specific place in a singular moment and look around.

Now, I imagine us (as we tell these future-story moments) itโ€™s as if we have taken ourselves, and dropped us in this one particular moment that could possibly happen, but we have no resources to deal with because - it doesnโ€™t exist now.

Meanwhile, you could have dropped yourself in all these other places - just like you can in Google street view - all these different ways that your future could eventually play out and that specific story moment may never, actually, happen.

Yet, our mind will treat that story that we are telling as if it is true now. And the present moment? Well, that, we're currently missing.

I invite you to pay attention to the stories you are telling about the future - especially when it comes to stories about your childโ€™s future.

As I said in an earlier episode, there is a level of preparation that we all need about the future.

Try combining the what-if with it, and invite yourself to spend time in a future that, sure, while it can be practical but also why not make it exciting and fun? Right now, you deserve nothing less.

Iโ€™ll talk about the present moment in the next episode.

Four things to remember as you enter the empty nest years is our topic for today (Day 7) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

Here we go:

00:44

Hello, amazing human and beautiful soul! One of the most surprising things about the empty nest transition, I have found, is that there isnโ€™t one singular transition period for all of us:

  • If you have more than one child, each child leaving mixes things up.

  • Many children end up returning home for- ever, or, some period of time down the road.

  • Just as your nest is becoming empty, you may become a caregiver to your parent and you may move in with them or they move in with you.

  • The empty nest years can sometimes be a not-so-empty nest.

The four things Iโ€™m mentioning today are great for each time your household dynamic changes for any reason, really, even if it is a return home from college break. Remember these four things as you adjust: PSPF.

The first P? Is Patience for Self. S is for Self-love - more on that back in Day 5. The second P is Patience for Others; and finally F: for Fun! So we have patience, patience, love, and fun - what else do we really need in life?  (okay, outside of water, food, shelter and air). [giggle]

While these four things are fairly self-explanatory, Iโ€™ll say a little bit more. The Patience for Self is in the navigation of the change - giving yourself time to adjust and the space to feel the emotions. Self-Love: we absolutely do cover this more in Day 5, but as always, you are freaking amazing and donโ€™t you dare forget it.

Next, we have Patience for Others - a change in the household impacts everyone in the household - that includes not only you and your partner(should you have one) but also siblings to those who are coming and going and it even impacts your pets.

Also, the impact may be different for each one of you. Having different emotions and being in different spaces is fine - and this is where the patience for one another helps.

And Finally - F for fun- it is super easy to forget this one in the day to day activities, the todo lists, all of the plans that  you have made, and so on.  I invite you to look for the fun, if you arenโ€™t naturally finding it.

03:13
