Challenge: Their Future - What's Your Story? (8/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

What’s your story about your child’s future? is our topic for today (Day 8) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

If this is your first time listening,  know we are diving into the challenge content. If you like what you hear, jump back to the episode titled “Getting Started with the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success” and then work your way through from the beginning - or visit EmptyNestSuccess.com to sign up for daily or weekly email delivery of this challenge that will lead you to companion videos, additional journal prompts, resources and more!

Here we go:

00:43

Hi, amazing human and beautiful soul, I’d like you to consider, today, the storytelling that  you do about our child’s future (or your own future).

Anytime we think, share, or talk about the future we are in imaginary-land.

Meaning, we are creating something (telling a story) that may or may not ever happen. How often are we telling stories that make us feel something other than really fantastic?

Stop for a moment and take in that you have lived on this planet for decades figuring out things as you go. You rise to challenges, and sometimes you don’t, but you’re still here and you keep going. Trust in yourself that if the future plays out in an unexpected way that you’ll have all the resources you need in that moment - or, that the unexpected way could be a lovely surprise.

Unless you are a time traveler,  (Do you have a tardis?) you aren’t in the future.

You may not be surprised that I have an analogy for these future-story moments. Remember, these are moments when we are guessing what might happen in the future.

Have you used Google earth? There’s that satellite view and then there’s an option to tap and get a street view style. There’s a little person you can drop onto a specific place in a singular moment and look around.

Now, I imagine us (as we tell these future-story moments) it’s as if we have taken ourselves, and dropped us in this one particular moment that could possibly happen, but we have no resources to deal with because - it doesn’t exist now.

Meanwhile, you could have dropped yourself in all these other places - just like you can in Google street view - all these different ways that your future could eventually play out and that specific story moment may never, actually, happen.

Yet, our mind will treat that story that we are telling as if it is true now. And the present moment? Well, that, we're currently missing.

I invite you to pay attention to the stories you are telling about the future - especially when it comes to stories about your child’s future.

As I said in an earlier episode, there is a level of preparation that we all need about the future.

Try combining the what-if with it, and invite yourself to spend time in a future that, sure, while it can be practical but also why not make it exciting and fun? Right now, you deserve nothing less.

I’ll talk about the present moment in the next episode.

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Four things to remember as you enter the empty nest years is our topic for today (Day 7) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

Here we go:

00:44

Hello, amazing human and beautiful soul! One of the most surprising things about the empty nest transition, I have found, is that there isn’t one singular transition period for all of us:

  • If you have more than one child, each child leaving mixes things up.

  • Many children end up returning home for- ever, or, some period of time down the road.

  • Just as your nest is becoming empty, you may become a caregiver to your parent and you may move in with them or they move in with you.

  • The empty nest years can sometimes be a not-so-empty nest.

The four things I’m mentioning today are great for each time your household dynamic changes for any reason, really, even if it is a return home from college break. Remember these four things as you adjust: PSPF.

The first P? Is Patience for Self. S is for Self-love - more on that back in Day 5. The second P is Patience for Others; and finally F: for Fun! So we have patience, patience, love, and fun - what else do we really need in life?  (okay, outside of water, food, shelter and air). [giggle]

While these four things are fairly self-explanatory, I’ll say a little bit more. The Patience for Self is in the navigation of the change - giving yourself time to adjust and the space to feel the emotions. Self-Love: we absolutely do cover this more in Day 5, but as always, you are freaking amazing and don’t you dare forget it.

Next, we have Patience for Others - a change in the household impacts everyone in the household - that includes not only you and your partner(should you have one) but also siblings to those who are coming and going and it even impacts your pets.

Also, the impact may be different for each one of you. Having different emotions and being in different spaces is fine - and this is where the patience for one another helps.

And Finally - F for fun- it is super easy to forget this one in the day to day activities, the todo lists, all of the plans that  you have made, and so on.  I invite you to look for the fun, if you aren’t naturally finding it.

03:13

Challenge: What if?  (6/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

What if? is our topic for today (Day 6) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

If this is your first time listening, know we are diving into the challenge content. Here we go:

00:41

Amazing human and beautiful soul….this one has been a game-changer for me and it might be for you as well!

I invite you to choose a topic that is near the top of your mind.

[pause]

Now I’d like you to form the first sentence that comes to mind around that topic that begins with What if…

[pause] What question came to mind for you?

[pause]

Is it a positive question or a negative question?

Meaning,  do you go to what if this particular scenario that wouldn’t be good, happens? Or do you go to something more along the lines of what if this incredible thing happens that’s super fun?

For many of us (and this may be you), what-iffing a topic may automatically bring on worries and concerns.

For example: Your child is considering changing their college major and you go to, “What if this major my child has chosen provides no job opportunities?”

or

“What if this [awful thing] happens?” And that [awful thing] is whatever you mind has  chosen to insert today.

While having a healthy level of outlook and preparation is not bad at all, when we always focus on the what ifs that can go wrong and never consider the what ifs that can go right - we tend to only find more things that can go wrong, and more things, and more things.

I have loved the switcheroo of the what ifs to positive so much so that I no longer focus on affirmations without putting what if in front of them. For the rare breed of human who fully believes a new affirmation they’re given for their lives out of the gate, you wouldn’t need to do this but if you hear an affirmation for your life and think, “yeah, right” or something similar, then try this what-if switcheroo!

An example might be nice. If you have an affirmation such as:

I am capable of doing anything I want. I am smart, beautiful and know who I am as a human.

You could find yourself pushing back on a portion of that - or all of it - but then add What if to the beginning and wow - things get interesting.

Let’s try it with that same affirmation. I’ll give you some space after each one so that you may  repeat these to yourself.

What if I am capable of doing anything I want?

[pause]

What if I am smart, beautiful and know who I am as a human?

[pause]

What if?

It gets interesting, doesn’t it? Of course, you can use this for your thoughts about your kids…

What if my child pursues their dream and it all works out?

And any topic under the sun - even to thoughts about your upcoming errands:

What if the time in the waiting room flies by and I have fun?

With this consideration, I ask you:

What if everything works out?

What if you could do anything in the world when you wake up tomorrow?

The possibilities here are endless. Allow What-if to open up your imagination, to shift your thoughts a bit, and see what happens.

Give what-iffing your life a try today.

04:38

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is …. What if you dreamt like you did when you were a child, and think "what if" that thing happens?

Challenge: Become Your Own Biggest Fan (5/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Becoming your own biggest fan is our topic  today (Day 5) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

Here we go:

00:42

Amazing human and beautiful soul, how is your inner dialogue about yourself?

Consider how kind you are when you speak to yourself. If you are like many humans, you already know you can be quite brutal.

Sadly, it is fairly common. Noting it, though, is a start.

For most of us, we haven't been trained to do anything other than unfortunate self-talk.

But noting that we do it, allows us to begin to be curious about it and consider new ways to talk to ourselves: ways to follow up with a thought and to show patience, kindness, loving consideration to ourselves.

Those unkind thoughts that we have about ourselves, they aren’t ones we were born with. We’ve heard them from someone and have decided that they are truths. If you are able to catch yourself in a thought about you that you wouldn’t say that out loud to someone you love (or anyone actually) then, it’s time to clean that up.

A really important thing to keep in mind, though, is to be kind to yourself as you process this. The last thing you want to do is bully yourself about bullying yourself - it is time to break that cycle. You are amazing after all!

One final thought to consider is that if you are unable to provide support and patience and love toward yourself, then where are you gaining the energy to do it for others?

Ooo. That was a little tough love there, huh?

For today, consider becoming your own biggest fan: cheering yourself on; having patience and love for yourself. And sit with the fun thought that your future self is cheering you on. Just as you can look back now and think upon your past self. How fun is that?

02:46

[level-up music]

Your journal prompt for today is …. Do you realize how unsupportive you can be to yourself through your thoughts? And, what is one thought you can change up to allow yourself to feel better?

Challenge: Celebrate Personal Wins (4/30)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

[level-up music]

Celebrating your personal wins is our topic for today (Day 4) in the 30-Day Challenge to Empty Nest Success.

[level-up music]

If this is your first time listening,  know we are diving into the challenge content. Here we go:

00:43

Amazing human and beautiful soul,  it is incredibly easy to take small wins for granted. This topic is one of my favorites. I encourage you to everyday,  celebrate a win - or multiple wins.

I like to say - celebrate your wins: big or small, we celebrate them all!

There are days where getting out of bed is a win! Maybe you made all the meals for your family - and you always do (without even giving it a second of thought).

I invite you to find something to celebrate each and every day. If you're comfortable, share your celebration with others, but be careful that you don't change how you feel about your win based on their reaction.

Sometimes the reactions of others may not line up with our expectations of their reaction. This could be for many reasons:  maybe they may have no interest in it; they may have something else entirely on their mind; they may not understand to the level that this is a big deal - for you. Maybe, it’s something that's easy for them, but it wasn't for you.

With this in mind, I encourage you to make the celebration of your win less dependent on other people's reactions.

If you feel good about the win before you tell someone, make sure no matter their reaction you still feel good about it after. It’s important!

You should be really proud of yourself. I’m celebrating with you and I'd love to know what your wins are.

02:28

Your journal prompt for today is ….What wins have you been ignoring in your life?
